Onward Movement Celebrates 8 Years

It was a multiple celebrations for the Majority Leader, Lagos State House of Assembly and Convener/General Overseer, Onward Movement of Nigeria, Hon. Sanai Oyeniran Bolanle Agunbiade and Executive Council and General Members of Onward Movement of Nigeria when they gathered people together to swear-in new executives and celebrate 8years of impactful existence.

At the colourful event which took place on Saturday, June 4, 2016, at Ule Eye Event Place, Lowa, Ikorodu, 30 Ikorodu awardees of Education District II 2016 Merit Award were also honoured.

The newly elected executive council of Onward Movement of Nigeria, a non-governmental organization includes the immediate past Council Leader, Ikorodu Local Government, Hon. Azeez Jimoh Olosugbo who was elected as Director-General by about 200 delegates in the February elections was sworn-in. Others are Mrs Abayomi Lara as Deputy Director-General, Mr Quawiyy Rabiu Secretary General, Mr Oluwakemi Buraimoh Public Relations Officer and Mr Yakub Ajalogun as Financial Secretary.

In his welcome speech, a thankful and fulfilled Convener/General Overseer who incidentally is the Majority Leader, Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon Agunbiade recalled his dramatic and event journey into the world of drama and politics and was very appreciative of those that supported him.

“Today, and most importantly, I owe God the duty to say this. Unknown to many, when Asipa Kaoli Olusanya became the Commissioner, on his own volition, he sent my brother Murphy Ajalogun to me to ask me to be his aide and I was left with making a decision to accept and leave my promising legal practice or refused him but I later chose the former. Again, in 2007, without preparing, Asipa Kaoli suddenly asked me to prepare for the House of Assembly contest by mobilizing my supporters for a rally on the eve of a political rally and when I told him that it was impossible, he responded that I should show that I have followers by mobilizing 1000 people and that was a challenged that I took up and mobilized successfully” Hon. Agunbiade recalled.

“Another person that has played a prominent role in my life is Otunba Ayodele Elesho, the former Commissioner for Information & Youth Development in Lagos State. When I was a struggling producer and I went to meet him for help, Otunba Elesho wrote a cheque of the sum I needed and I still have the photocopy of the cheque in my file. These are the people God had used in my life to be someone and which is why I am also trying to encourage our youths in Ikorodu and make them self-reliant through Onward Movement” he added.

The Majority Leader, Lagos State House of Assembly also recalled how human factor in politics turned him against a leading political leader, Alhaji Olufowora and how both put the interest of the party first in resolving their differences. He was also full of appreciation for the party chieftain for supporting his third term re-election despite their political differences.

Explaining the concept of the formation of Onward Movement of Nigeria, Hon. Agunbiade stated that, “After the first election that ushered me into the Lagos State House of Assembly, I came to a realise that there is need to bring together the foot soldiers that worked for my election. The idea is to change them from the traditional ways of practicing politics and make them self-reliant. Primarily, I tried to dissuade them from believing that they have to serve every politician for them to be somebody. The vision of Onward Movement is to provide a platform for positive minds, enhancing self-reliance and self-determination”

“The features of Onward Movement logo consists of world, wisdom, star, struggle, funnel, rod, fire and furnace, mystery and love” the Majority Leader stated.

The newly sworn-in Director-General, Hon (Onward) Azeez Jimoh Olosugbo during the programme performed his first official duty by administering the oath of office on the elected Secretary General, Onward Quawiyy Rabiu Afolabi who was away on assignment at the beginning of the programme.

In his speech, Hon. Olosugbo thanked the Onward General Overseer, Hon. Agunbiade and entire members of Onward Movement of Nigeria for their commitment, dedication and loyalty in the last eight years.

Hon. Olosugbo also announced the appointment of Onward Kudirat Owolabi and Barr. David Oyedepo as Directors, Empowerment & Skill Acquisition, and Community & Social Services respectively. Long term and commitment awards to were also presented to some members.

The sum of N50,000 each was also announced for the best Junior and Senior Students in WAEC among other prizes for the students, teachers and schools.

The celebration was kicked started by the performance of Faboo, an Ikorodu-born artiste who electrified the hall with his popular track, ‘Ikorodu’ among other numbers he dropped on stage.

The tempo was sustained by the performance of another rave making and award winning Ikorodu artiste, Qudus Fakoya popularly known and called Qdot. After about 10minutes of performance, the juju exponent, Alhaji Y.K. Ajao took to the stage and got guests and members of Onward Movement of Nigeria on stage.

The immediate past Ikorodu Local Government Council Leader, Hon. Aziz Jimoh Olosugbo emerged the new Director-General, Onward Movement of Nigeria, a Non-Government after months of permutation, politicking and political maneuvering. The body has been responsible for the Majority Leader, Lagos State House of Assembly’s programmes.

Other elected officials at the election which ran into late in the night on Friday, February 5, 2016 at the Hon. S.O.B. Agunbiade Constituency Office on Awolowo Way, Ikorodu are Mrs Abayomi Lara as Deputy Director-General, Mr Quawiyy Rabiu Secretary, Mr Oluwakemi Buraimoh, Public Relations Officer and Mr Yakub Ajalogun as Financial Secretary.

Speaking online with THE IMPACT after the election, Hon. Olosugbo stated that the election is no victor, no vanquish”. He pledged to run an all-inclusive administration that would usher in new era for members’ social, political and economic empowerment.

“It was a very tense process but thank God, the end has justified the means. It is now time to work and nothing can be achieved if all hands are not on desk. Our plan is to run an all-inclusive administration because it is against the objectives of the Onward Movement of Nigeria to leave anybody behind.”

“Our administration would offer new era in term of mass mobilization of human resources. We intend to bring quality people into Onward to compliment the efforts of those that have been given their best over the years. We also plan to work towards economic, social and political emancipation of members.

He appealed to members to join hands with his administration in repositioning Onward and help the General Overseer, Hon. Agunbiade in delivering his electoral promises to the electorates.

Hon. Olosugbo had served as Director of Organization & Strategy, Onward Movement of Nigeria, two-terms Councilor representing Ward F and the Majority Leader, Ikorodu Local Government Legislative Arm. He was also the Personal Assistant to Hon. Lanre Sunmi Odesanya, former Ikorodu Constituency I to Lagos State House of Assembly and also served as THE Director of Mobilization & Strategy of the Hon. Agunbiade Re-Election in the last general election.

Meanwhile, analysts have submitted that the election of Hon. Olosugbo as the Director-General, Onward Movement Of Nigeria has further shown that the young politician would be a formidable force for the contest for Ikorodu Local Government Chairmanship which has been gathering momentum.

About 200 accredited delegates took part in the election.
