Lagos @ 50 Celebration: Ikorodu Division Hosts Boat Regatta Tomorrow
It will be a celebration of one of the cultural heritages Ikorodu division is endowed with comes tomorrow, Saturday, April 15, 2017, when boat regatta takes the centre stage both on water and on the land.
The venue for the Ikorodu division’s phase of the boat regatta event is the Ikorodu Ferry Terminal in Ebute,Ikorodu.
Boat regatta, which is one of the major cultural values of the division, is a yearly celebration of the people of Ebute-Iga, Ibeshe and Ijede among other riverine communities in Ikorodu division.
While it is a major part of the annual Liwe festival in Ebute-Iga, the culturally synonymous to water event is called ‘Okosi’ in Ijede and also a major heritage of Ibeshe people in Ikorodu.
The celebration of the water based event which has not been given the projection it deserved was celebrated early this year with pomp and pageantry as part of the yearly Liwe festival in Ebute-Iga, with the main objective of using it to make the community a tourist destination.
Meanwhile, Prince Rotimi Ogunleye, Lagos State Commissioner for Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives and the Chairman, Committee on Boat Regatta of Lagos @ 50 for Ikorodu Division, has assured residents of Ikorodu division of a very entertaining and engaging boat regatta outing in Ikorodu tomorrow.
Aside boat display on water, THE IMPACT also gathered that there will be regatta display on the land, cultural activities, competition among participating communities and other side attractions that would make the event worthwhile for the indigenes and residents alike.
Meanwhile, in a conversation with Prince Abiola Kosoko, Alashe of Ebute-Iga, he said that “the event would allow other parts of the state to see what Ikorodu division is capable of in terms of cultural values particularly as it regards to boat regatta”.
“In Ikorodu division, boat regatta is a cultural heritage that has been with Ebute-Iga, Ibeshe, Offin, Oreta, Bayeku and Ijede, among others. He stated.
