Lagos @50 Celebration: Community Day Is To Showcase Cultural Values of Lagosians – Chief Michael Olawale Cole

Chairman of the Community Day/Lagos Carnival sub-committee of the Lagos @50 Celebration  and former Commissioner  in Lagos State, Chief Michael Olawale Cole, has stated that the purpose of earmarking a day for the community, Lagos carnival and parade of colours is to showcase the cultural value of every community in the state.

 

The former Commissioner stated this while addressing the Community Media Forum in Alausa Secretariat, Ikeja recently, while also adding that the community day celebration is designed to accommodate every Lagosian irrespective of their status, class and background.

 

“The Lagos state Government has the citizenry at heart for the celebration and it also wants the whole state to be included in it. Saturday13th of May has been set aside as a special day for the communities in the state. The event of May 13 is going to be special because we are going to be celebrating same across the state” ,he stated.

 

“It will be holding in 20 venues across the Lagos state. In principle, 98% of what is on the road map is what we will be having that day. About two locations have been changed. The wish of the Governor is to do this in all the 57 local governments and local council development areas (LCDAs), but it not possible, so he is urging the remaining 37 council areas to join the nearest council in the celebration”,he added.

 

“On that same day, there will be carnival. We want you to give us adequate coverage. You are free to move around to any local government you wish to. Please, help us to give a good coverage to the event so that the celebration across the Lagos communities would be documented for future” ,Chief Cole appealed.

 

“We expect each community to showcase their cultural values and heritage. There is also going to be parade of colours. It is a day set aside for the people in Lagos State to make fun and merry because they have all been part of the success of Lagos Staté.”

 

Also speaking, Mr Sanya Oshinjo, Sole Administrator, Bariga Local Council Development Area and Chairman, Conference of Sole Administrators in the state,said, “We thank you for coming around to be part of this as we are celebrating Lagos State. We are committed to the success of the whole event because its affect the grassroots people.”

 

“When you talk to 20 Local governments, you are at same time talking to 37 council areas in Lagos State. So, we want to assure you that we are prepared to host you on that day. You know that presently in the country, security is very important. I can assure  you that adequate provision has been made for the security of lives and properties as we have mobilized various security agencies”, he assured Lagosians.

 

“On that day, there will be display of various culture while cultural attires, dance and more will be displayed to celebrate Lagos state.As for us(the Sole Administrators), we are going to make sure that food is available for all” ,he added

 

In her own contribution, Princess Abiodun Elegushi , Sole Administrator, Eti-Osa West Local Government, added that children’s corner, gallery exhibition and movie screening will also feature in  the Community Day celebration across the state.

 

Ikorodu venue for the event is Lagos State Model College, Igbogbo. The event starts by 10am.
