Anxiety Grips APC As Aspirants, Leaders, Party Members Await Candidate List
Kunle Adelabu & Wale Jagun.
The battle to become chairmanship and Councillorship candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Ikorodu Central Local Government and the five Local Council Development Areas(LCDAs) in Ikorodu Ikorodu Division is taking a fiercer dimension.
While the aspirants are now alleged to be sleeping in their respective leaders’ homes to ensure that their names are on the much awaited candidates list for the coming Council elections later this year, their leaders are said to be shuttling between Ikorodu,APC’s State Secretariat at Acme and home of the national leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in Bourdillon,Ikoyi,Lagos.
Following the aborted Chairmanship and Councillorship primaries on Saturday, May 27 and Monday, May 29, 2017, the fight to pick the party’s candidates, according to report, has now become a tug of war among the party leaders across the division. The leaders are said to be supporting different aspirants for different reasons.
The only rancour-free council in the division regarding the Chairmanship candidates is Ikorodu West LCDA where Princess Jumoke Jimbo emerged as adopted candidate of the party. Her case was settled following the appeal by Asiwaju Tinubu that the 19 Chairmanship aspirants, who are former Executive Secretaries, should be given the opportunity to emerge the party’s candidates for based on their loyalty and commitment to the party.
Her case became clearer following the pronouncement and returning of the 19 former Executive Secretaries as candidates by Sen. Tokunbo Afikuyomi, Chairman, APC Local Government Electoral Committee, during the inconclusive chairmanship primary election held at Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere.
Ikorodu Central LG
Since returning from the failed Chairmanship primary election, supporters of the two leading aspirants for the Ikorodu Central LG Chairmanship position, Alhaji Rilwan Jinadu and Mr Wasiu Adeshina have been claiming that their candidature was endorsed at the violence riding primary election.
Since election did not hold despite the presence of delegates at the Teslim Balogun venue of the primary election, the game has now shifted to power politics as emergence of candidates would now be determined by the clout and influence of the respective leaders sponsoring and supporting the aspirants.
As at Monday, May 29, 2017, THE IMPACT gathered that a list, which has the name of Alhaji Rilwan Jinadu as the party’s Chairmanship candidate for Ikorodu Central LG, has been submitted and accepted by Sen. Afikuyomi. The list, according to report, has the blessings of Asiwaju Tinubu and the State’s party chairman, Otunba Henry Ajomale.
It was also gathered that Asipa Kaoli Olusanya, former Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture and Princess Adenrele Ogunsanya, former Secretary to the Lagos State Government, are not leaving anything to chance in ensuring that the name of Alhaji Jinadu remain on the alleged list.
Also giving maximum financial, moral and other supports to the Jinadu ticket is the trio of Hon. Babajimi Benson, Member, Federal House of Representatives representing Ikorodu Federal Constituency, Hon. Sanai Agunbiade, the Majority Leader, Lagos State House of Assembly and his colleague from Ikorodu constituency ll ,Hon. Nurudeen Solaja.
Also backing Alhaji Jinadu are the five APC Chairmen in the division.
On the other hand, Mr Wasiu Adeshina’s camp, which is being supported by the old political horses like Prince Abiodun Ogunleye, former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Olorunfunmi Basorun, former Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Alhaji Musliu Animashaun (De Cubano) and Alhaji Badru Enifeni, is also not sleeping nor relenting in its effort to win the chairmanship ticket.
With the old party chieftains are Prince Rotimi Ogunleye, Commissioner for Commerce, Industry & Cooperatives and Hon. Sunmi Odesanya, Commissioner I, Lagos State House of Assembly Commission among others.
A source informed THE IMPACT that the Adeshina’s camp is doing everything humanly possible to change the direction which the pendulum is about to swing regarding the party’s chairmanship ticket in the council.
We equally gathered that there has been severe pressure on Sen. Afikuyomi to accept another name in place of the one with him.
Also ,it was gathered that the effort of the Adeshina’s promoters may have yielded result late Tuesday, May 31, 2017, when we alleged that Alhaji Rilwan Jinadu’s name was replaced on the list with Mr Wasiu Adeshina. This, we also gathered, is causing serious concern in the camp of Jinadu.
But a reliably source within the jnadu’s camp informed THE IMPACT that though, the opposing camp is making frantic efforts to change the tide but nothing as changed as Alhaji Jinadu’s name is still on the list as the candidate for Ikorodu Central LG
Furthermore, another factor which, according to report ,is working against the emergence of Alhaji Jinadu is the Ayangbure palace factor. It was gathered that the Ayangbure of Ikorodu and Alhaji Jinadu are not on the same page and the traditional rulers are also said to be interested in who emerge as the chairman of the council.
However, another authoritative source also told THE IMPACT that the Ayangbure palace is supporting the emergence of Alhaji Jinadu as APC candidate due to the influence of Asipa Kaoli Olusanya, Princess Ogunsanya, Hon. Agunbiade and Hon. Benson.
The issue over who emerge as the APC Chairmanship candidate between Alhaji Jinadu and Mr Adeshina appears to be at the deadend presently as their respective camps seem not to know where the pendulum may finally swing.
The duo of comrade Kehinde Okeowo and Princess Folashade Olabanji-Oba are also not relenting in their pursuits even though.
Another tensed council is Igbogbo/Bayeku LCDA where formidable forces with great commitment to their respective courses are at loggerhead to ensure that either Comrade Sesan Daini or Mr Taiwo Orenuga emerge as the APC Chairmanship candidate in the council.
Since the emergence of the candidate is not going to be determined by the delegates through an election, the third aspirants, Hon. Bosun Agoro seems not to be in the contest any longer considering the formidable forces behind Daini and Orenuga.
But in politics, it is not over until it is over. He may at the end emerge as the preferred candidate to settle the fierce battle between the camps of the two leading aspirants in the interest of the party.
From all indications, Chief Dele Olowu and Asipa Kaoli Olusanya, the two leaders of The Mandate Group (TMG) in Igbogbo/Bayeku LCDA, who owns the joker to determine who emerge as the APC chairmanship candidate in the council, seem to have pitched their tents with Hon. (Mrs) Adebimpe Akinsola to ensure the emergence of Comrade Sesan Daini as the APC candidate for the chairmanship position.
Asiwaju Olorunfunmi Basorun and his formidable group are sponsoring and supporting Mr Taiwo Orenuga’s candidature.
The former SSG is also supported by the former deputy Governor, Prince Abiodun Ogunleye and other elder politicians across the division..
It was gathered that Igbogbo/Bayeku LCDA is one of the few council which Asiwaju Tinubu has interest in. His interest, it was gathered, may be Comrade Daini Sesan.
As at the time of writing this report, Comrade Sesan Daini seems to have the upper hand. We also gathered that his name is presently on the list allegedly submitted to Senator Afikuyomi.
However, a stalwart of the ruling party in Igbogbo told THE IMPACT that no one is sure of anything until the party release the authentic list.
This is politics where anything can happen before June 3rd deadline for the submission of candidates’ names to the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC).
Ikorodu North LCDA
Though, the situation in Ikorodu North LCDA is similar to what is going on in Ikorodu Central LG and Igbogbo/Bayeku LCDA, Hon. Mathew Adesanya seems to be in the lead.
Hon. Mathew, whose candidature is being backed by Asipa Kaoli Olusanya and Hon. Sanai Agunbiade, is also said to have resolved his political differences with Hon. Babajimi Benson who is now supporting his ambition.
Hon. Mathew, who is also being supported by four ward chairmen, also appears to have the support of majority delegates and would have won if election was allowed.
More so, Hon. Adeola Banjo, another aspirant with strong connection, though lacks the support from the delegates, he however has the full support of the leadership of the party, both in his council and in other councils in the division. Like in Ikorodu Central and Igbogbo/Bayeku LCDA, the old political war horses like Prince Abiodun Ogunleye, Alhaji Akibu Adewunmi, Alhaji Musliu Animashaun and Alhaji Badru Enifeni are rooting for Hon Banjo.
Also supporting Hon. Banjo are Otunba Olasunkanmi Tijani, Prince Adeola Jokomba and Mrs Salau,APC Chairman in Ikorodu North.
As at the time of writing this report, we gathered that the name of Hon. Mathew Adesanya is on the list submitted to Sen. Tokunbo Afikuyomi, as APC chairmanship candidate for Ikorodu North LCDA in the coming council elections in the state. But it is never over until it is over in politics as Hon Banjo and others like Mr Ameen Ibrahim and Comrade Olaekan Murisku are also not relenting in ensuring that they emerge as APC Chairmanship candidate.
Traditionally, who gets what in or from Imota is usually decided at the Ranodu’s palace, hence who emerge as the next council boss of the ancient town would be no different.
Aside the fact that the monarch of the town, Oba Ajibade Bakare Agoro, FCA, was a three-term councilor in the old Ikorodu Local Government which makes him a relevant and active political actor, he is also concerned about the developments in his domain and he has been directly involved in bringing economic, political and social developments to Imota.
Like in Ikorodu Central LG, Igbogbo/Bayeku and Ikorodu North LCDAs, where two candidates have emerged as frontrunners, two main aspirants have equally emerged for the top job in Imota LCDA.
Out of the seven aspirants cleared by the APC Screening Committee to contest the Chairmanship primaries, the two aspirants have emerged as potential candidate for the chairmanship position while others are playing catch-up. The two aspirants are Mr Hassan Anjorin and Prince Wasiu Agoro. While Anjorin is enjoying massive support from the party delegates, members and some leaders who fully identified with his course, Prince Agoro is enjoying the backing of Oba Agoro, Hon. Babajimi Benson and Hon. Nurudeen Solaja ,an indigene of Imota representing Ikorodu Constituency II at the Lagos State House of Assembly and other party leaders.
The two lawmakers , THE IMPACT learnt, are giving their support to Prince Agoro because of Oba Agoro who played a vital role in ensuring the emergence of the two lawmakers during the last general elections two years ago.
Hon. Solaja, according to report, was unsuccessful in his bid to dissuade Mr Hassan, who is one of his trusted lieutenants, from contesting against Prince Agoro because of Oba Ranodu’s factor. The lawmaker who owns his political relevance to the monarch, we gathered, has no choice than to support the monarch’s brother.
Oba Agoro did not only endorse and present Hon. Solaja as the sole candidate for the Ikorodu Constituency II seat in the State Assembly when it was the turn of Imota to fill the position, he ensured that his candidacy was accepted by other stakeholders across the constituency II, Ikorodu division and the state.
Like Hon. Solaja, Hon. Benson also enjoyed great support from the monarch which ensured that delegates and residents of Imota massively voted for him during the primary election and also during the general elections in 2015. To the federal lawmaker who is known for always standing by those that supported his political emergence, it is payback time for Oba Agoro.
According to report ,the candidacy of Prince Wasiu Agoro, which is also enjoying the support of the most political and opinion leaders in Imota, is not under any threat except the surprise political relevance which Mr Hassan Anjorin and other aspirants are attracting.
However, the unexpected emergence of two experienced politicians, Otunba Muyiwa Adesanya, former Vice Chairman, Ikorodu Local Government and Former Executive Secretary, Imota LCDA and Hon. (Mrs) Munirat Yisa, the embattled former two-term Vice Chairman of Imota LCDA, for the chairmanship race seem not to be flying at all. But as mentioned earlier, you can never rule out surprises in politics.
In Ijede LCDA, there are about six aspirants presently in the race to occupy the chairmanship position of the council. Three aspirants seem to be leading the battle for top job. They are Alhaji Fathiu Salisu, Alhaji Alaba Lateef , Mr Oyedele Adenuga and Mr Oyedele Adenuga.
Alhaji Fathiu Salisu is enjoying the support of the delegates and party faithful which makes him one of the frontrunners to clinch the ticket.
Alhaji Alaba Lateef is also a very strong contender for the chairmanship position. He is said to be enjoying massive followership among the delegates, within the party and the entire Ijede populace. The only thing that may hinder his chance is his non-indigeneship issue.
Mr Oyedele Adenuga is The Mandate Group(TMG) Chairman in Ijede LCDA and he is enjoying the supports of the APC leaders across board.
Generally, it seems that the political leaders would have to give in to the principle of ‘give and take’. In fact, they may have unconsciously settled for that. As the old political war horses, led by Prince Abiodun Ogunleye and Asiwaju Basorun, are serious in having their favoured aspirant emerged as the Chairmanship candidate for Ikorodu Central LG, against the popular Alhaji Jinadu. Asipa Kaoli Olusanya, Princess Adenrele Ogunsanya and Chief Dele Olowu, Hon. Babajimi Benson and Hon. Sanai Agunbiade may have to settle for Igbogbo/Bayeku and Ikorodu North LCDAs.
But since it is not over until is over in politics, political permutations would no doubt continue until the party releases its authentic list, possibly on Thursday, June 2 or Friday, June 3, 2017, to meet the LASIEC’s June 3 deadline for the submission of candidate lists by the political parties.
