Union Leaders Lead Anti-Sogunro’s Protest To Alausa
-Speaker condemns assault by soldiers
Leaders of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic, (ASUP), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics (SSANIP), Lagos State Polytechnic chapters on Thursday, June 8, 2017, led other staff on a protest to Lagos State House of Assembly to demand for the removal of Mr Samuel Sogunro as the Rector.
The protesters also demanded for the intervention of the state lawmakers in payment of the CONTISS 15 Migration salary arrears.
The recent protest which started on Wednesday, June 7, 2017, was forcefully dispersed by soldiers who brutalized students and residents of Lambo-Lasunwon community where most LASPOTECH students resiside.
Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, while addressing members of the three unions condemned the assaults on the ASUP Welfare Director, Comrade adewunmi Oluwafemi, wife and students while he also appealing to the staff to consider the students and not to take laws into their hands.
“This is a civil rule and when there is a crisis, it is the police that should be invited and not the military. If there is any crisis, the authority in such institution should call the police and it has to be done in a civilised manner, not to the extent of beaten people up and vandalising properties. It does not make sense; whoever does that should know that people will react naturally. I apologise to the union, please don’t be offended.
While appealing to the protesters to consider the students, Mr Speaker stated: “I just have to appeal to you. Let’s consider the students. Don’t take laws into your hands, let us maintain peace. Think about others. We are going to take the matter up; it is going to be a quick one. Anybody that will rule that institution must abide by the rules and regulations.”
He promised that the assembly would intervene in the dispute between the school and the workers.
Reacting to the request of the protesters for the removal of the Rector, Obasa said, “Sogunro was appointed by the governor, give us opportunity to look into the matter and we will take position without taking sides, that I can assure you,” he said.
The protesters carried placards with inscriptions such as, “We appreciate Gov Ambode for good governance and proper funding of LASPOTECH”, “We demand the immediate payment of CONTISS 15 Migration salary arrears” and “We demand the immediate sack of the Polytechnic Rector- Mr Samuel Sogunro Olayinka for maladministration, anti-staff welfare and nepotism among others.”
